Authentic Materials for Teaching English – a New Vocational Training for University-Level Teachers
On November 16th, I attended a new vocational training for university-level English teachers organized by the English Teaching Resource Center (ETRC) and the Moldovan English Teachers Association (META).
This time the training included two workshops:
1. Facilitating Specialized Texts Reading through Schema-Based Activities, presented by Ms. Olga Zingan, lecturer, UTM.
2. Authentic Materials in the English Classroom to Practice the 4 Skills, presented by Ms. April Salerno, Fulbright Scholar, University of Virginia, USA.
The participants were informed about the importance of schema-theory for understanding a specialized text and pre-reading activities, such as brainstorming, pre-questioning, pre-teaching vocabulary, semantic mapping, K-W-L chart (What I Know, What I Want to Know, What I learned).
The Fulbright Scholar, dr. April Salerno, spoke about a lot of strategies for helping students in their activities. Using authentic materials has a great number of benefits: it increases student motivation/interest, offers access to language used by native speakers, provides opportunities to practice real-life language skills, builds understanding of target-language culture etc.
The event took place at the Technical University of Moldova and was supported by the US Embassy in Chisinau.

La 16 noiembrie am urmat un nou training vocațional pentru lectorii universitari de limbă engleză.
De data aceasta formarea s-a desfășurat în incinta Universității Tehnice a Moldovei, fiind organizată de Centrul de resurse pentru predarea limbii engleze (ETRC) și Asociația Profesorilor de limbă engleză (META).
Training-ul a inclus 2 ateliere, primul consacrat înțelegerii și receptării unui text specializat prin schemă (termen din domeniul psihologiei cognitive), cel de-al doilea – utilizării materialelor autentice la ora de limbă engleză.
Punerea în aplicare a strategiilor analizate în cadrul workshop-urilor aduce o serie de beneficii pentru învățământul centrat pe student: augmentează motivația/interesul studentului, oferă acces la limba vorbită de nativi, dezvoltă și îmbogățește paleta competențelor lingvistice, asigură o mai bună înțelegere a limbii/culturii țintă ș.a.
